Re: "Ghost" is streaming NOW
Since we're on the topic of Axl vs Slash(again). Slash couldn't hold Axl's jockstrap in the songwriting department. Let's be real.
Please. Axl has never written too much material, he's more of a producer. Chinese Democracy also proves that, too. He needs others to write music for him. He can't even play guitar good enough to create something better than a 14-year old could. Besides the great Estranged, November Rain and This I Love, nothing proves his songwriting ability. Nothing.

Out of the post 93 era, I'll take Axl's ability over Slash's any day of the week.
When it comes to GNR songwriting, you guys are measuring the wrong dicks.
Might want to get a ruler out and measure this one....

misterID wrote:I blame Chris's corny, bland lyrics from his last 2 solo albums on him. Has nothing to do with the music. As I said before, from what I've heard of the album Slash isn't the weak link. Chris hasn't been "on" songwriting wise since Out Of Exile.
I agree his last two solo albums weren't stellar, and Carry On is one of the worst albums this past decade, although the Billie Jean cover was bad ass.
Scream is a good album.....for another artist. Said it when that album was released.....he should have gave all those tracks to some pop tarts and they would have made a killing with them. He stepped too far out of his element with that record. The songs are there, they just aren't Cornell songs, if you know what I mean.
When the guy is "on", there's no one better. Slash sending him a track isn't gonna be one of those "on" moments.
I actually rate Carry On. It took a long time and repeated listens, but have another crack at that album James. I hated it at first too (was expecting another helping of the amazing Euphoria Morning), but grew to love it.

Prostitute was a basic piano song .....as was Catcher in the Rye--I think. 2 of my favorites on Chinese and any Gnr album. I think Axl is pretty good with helping the players arrange the songs and ideas....lyrics are obviously a pretty huge part of songwriting as well so discounting stuff like SCOM, Coma, Locomotive, Breakdown, TWAT, etc isn't fair.
Whatever, no ones opinion is right or wrong on this subject.:/

Izzy
It's a myth. Just because Izzy wrote a ton of Stones sounding songs, he didn't make Guns N' Roses. Slash, Duff, Izzy and Axl were Guns N' Roses, with the actual drummer strongly influencing the sound. Without Slash, all the Izzy songs would've sounded like Rapidfire or JuJu Hounds. That would have tanked and this forum wouldn't exist.
Second. I don't even agree with the 'Izzy wrote most of the GN'R stuff' statement. Quantity wise perfaps, but not quality wise. I mean compare his songs to Slash's monsters, like Locomotive or Coma, not to mention Slash's enormous contribution to songs were he didn't get a single credit (NR, Estranged etc.) - while Izzy was AWOL during the UYI sessions. YCBM would be a Richards-song without Slash's rocking it. Not one guy was GN'R. Stop downplaying Slash's importance. Without his song and solo writing ability, GN'R would have played in empty clubs. Same goes for Axl and Izzy, and maybe Duff.
Re: "Ghost" is streaming NOW
I agree with Mad that song stucture is Axl's strength. Probably the best of any other artist I can think of. Calling Axl just a producer is pretty ridiculous. I think Axl pushed Slash to his best moments, probably against his will, and probably a big reason why they can't work together. They're both set in their ways. The combo of Axl, Izzy and Slash was a perfect mix for that moment in time. I disagree with Axl needing Slash or Izzy. Some people are completely transfixed on riffs and their ideas of what a rock song should be, or how it should sound, for whatever reason. Axl really doesn't need traditional rock formulas, or formulas in general, to bring out the best in him, which is what I admire the most about the guy.
And I totally buy Axl's remark about Slash not wanting to work that hard at making music. That's Slash's problem, from my perspective, going back to the Snakepit albums to this album. He just doesn't sound like he's trying. He's just playing, and it totally hits me as uninspired; just another middle-aged rock dude just making a rock album, not pushing the envelope, or at least himself.
I love CD, so it goes without saying that I think Axl found "his band" with the 2002 line up. The sad thing is Axl was his own worst enemy in not knowing when to say when. There's just too much going on with CD for its own good. It has nothing to do with needing Slash, or riffs. Axl's negatives are all on Axl.

Said the guy who hardly ever went to a rehearsal, and only occasionally turned up in the studio. Axl is the lazy rockstar, who wants others to write songs for him and the completes the lyrics in half a year. Axl spent more than a decade 'working' on an album, that SUCKS musically, except a few BH solos. CD's boring and unercognizable. There is not a single riff worth a mention, on a 'rock' album. What a joke. Nobody can tell which band is playing, without hearing Axl, while the old GN'R songs took 2 seconds to recognize. I remember hearing some music in the radio and I knew it was Slash's playing. Well, it was the first time I heard Ain't It Fun.

Re: "Ghost" is streaming NOW
^ I agree that people shouldn't minimise Slash's contribution to old GNR. While I respect each of the members, the real unique voices on those records were axl's structures, melodies and words, and Slash's tone, style and licks. That's what made them memorable. Now it so happens that steven, sorum, izzy and duff may have been the perfect mofos to complete the picture...i'm not dismissing them for a second overall, but Axl and Slash is what most people can accept as GNR and there's a reason for that beyond public ignorance.
But you guys loose me when you start critizing Chinese Democracy, I think it's an absolutely astonishing and amazing album. And this is comming from me, who would list It's 5'O'clock Somewhere as amongst his fav works on guitar and important albums to my youth. But lets call a spade a spade. Both Axl and Slash are beyond exceptionally talented in their respective fields.
