Re: 2009-10 Chinese Democracy World Tour
As far as Americans (again, in general) are concerned, the rest of the world can have this GnR. That is what Axlin is saying and for the most part, that reflects what the American population thinks. They will go see the real band, but not this. I've been saying that for almost a decade now.
Talk about shooting your own foot.
Trade in a good live show and a great night out with great musicians for...
A night home with the girlfriend watching CSI on TV.
The real band ain't coming back. I've settled for it a long time ago, and so has others. Even the average Joe in South America or Europe. Another succesfull tour proved it.
But if Americans don't wanna play that game, have fun at home instead and let the rest of us have fun.
When that's said, GNR can pull of a fun tour in USA even today, just like in 2006. Crowds dont disappear in 4 years.
We have so many other things to do, pretend GnR is irrelevant. It's not like no GnR = do nothing. It means no GnR = do something else. Maybe the rest of the world just doesn't have better options. I guess I forget how lucky we are to live in the US.
Trade in a "good" live show for a great live show. Or a sporting event. Or dinner and theater. No, I'd say settling for a "good" live show is shooting yourself in the foot.
Re: 2009-10 Chinese Democracy World Tour
This ain't a dig at anyone, theres lots of people in the rest of the world who want old GNR and tone of ppl in america hungry for newgnr, its just the way it is
Well, when you say stuff like this, you're just wrong. Yes, there are a ton of people in the rest of the world that would love to see the old band back together again. There are not "tons" (assuming that's what you mean) of people in the US hungry for the new band. If there were, the album would have sold and the tours would have sold and filled. They couldn't even fill arenas with blocked off sections by giving tickets away. Think about that.
The international market settles for the new band, the US doesn't. People are telling you that's what's happening and the numbers support it. Many of the biggest new band supporters have said this as well. Anyone being honest with themselves in the US would admit it.
Re: 2009-10 Chinese Democracy World Tour
Exactly. In 2006 I tried to garner interest in everyone going to the GN'R shows. I got alot of support. Tons of people going, "wow, that's really cool", "you're gonna go see Axl? Awesome, I love that guy", "i'm sure that'll be a great show, enjoy"
No negativity
However, as far as they themselves attending... totally different story. "Nah, I don't really want to pay that to see the Axl solo band", "I saw the real Guns N' Roses in 1991/92, when they come back, i'll be first in line", "Velvet Revolver is more Guns N' Roses than Guns N' Roses"
People weren't negative, they just drew a hard fucking line. They want Guns N' Fuckin' Roses, the real one, no substitutes.
That's just my experience. I don't know about anyone else's, but if that attitude just slightly represents the American people, it comes into a bit clearer focus that the old band would be playing to sold out arenas, not half-full.
The stadium days for old GN'R in America are long gone, except for maybe major cities. Hell, Metallica doesn't even play those gigs anymore.
And as for what DCK said about "shooting themselves in the foot", Buzzsaw was right. They aren't sitting at home, they're doing other things. In some cases, they're giving other artists from that same era their money like Metallica, U2, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, or hell even Poison, before GN'R.
Re: 2009-10 Chinese Democracy World Tour
I stand by my statement about Detroit. In 02 The Palace was about 80% full in this side of a blizzard. In 06 the entire upper bowl was covered and the lower bowl was about 60% full as was the floor.
If GNR came to Detroit today, I'd be going. With me would be a guy from work, my girlfriend and my guitarist. I honestly don't think I could convince anyone else I know to go unless it was free perhaps.
Thank you russ. That's my point. You like it and you go. So do some others. They like it and that is great. SOMEONE will always show up as long as Axl is there. But a lot of other people have something better to do...even if it's free. That shouldn't discourage anyone from going that wants to go.
I am all for people liking it and enjoying it.

Well, that's really not the point. People can do plenty of other things, but I seriously doubt any of the bands you listed play the same night, at the same city when GNR plays there. When did that ever happen?
I've never seen Motley Crue perform GNR songs. Or Bon Jovi do Welcome to the jungle either. So, it's not the same. You can change your interest, leave interest for GNR all togheter, totally ignore it and go to a Bon Jovi show the next month instead, but I happen to like the songs and therefore I want to see the songs being played. As the old band ain't coming back, I take the band that replaced the Chinese Democracy-band and have a good time. Might even have a beer or two. It's awesome to see Axl live. It beats a computer night or seeing some local piss poor band any day. Then next month, I go to Sweden and see CrashDiet because they rule THAT much more than GNR anyway, but I still find time to see GNR even if I like other bands better.
I guess you're just spoiled in the US then, and don't really *need* all these bands. That's what I hear anyway. Who wants to listen to GNR play? Who wants to listen to a cover band right? So boring. I wanna stay home and save my money for Motley Crue. Good for the rest of us then.

Obviously. You're all bankrupt.

That's not the point. I'm talking about people not going to new GN'R shows out of protest. It's not getting older. It's not getting more expensive. It's that Bon Jovi, Metallica, Poison, whoever are seen as more legitimate than current GN'R. They say "i'm not giving them my money", not because it cost too much, but out of spite because the customer is NOT getting what they WANT. And that's the real GN'R.
I've never seen Motley Crue perform GNR songs. Or Bon Jovi do Welcome to the jungle either. So, it's not the same.
How very true. I've never seen Guns N' Roses perform Guns N' Roses songs. The songs they wrote. I've just seen a cover band with the original vocalist.
I don't say that to be a dick. I say that for what it is. That swing flies both ways. Some people have NO interest in seeing a fake GN'R perform the original band's songs. They truely believe that. I don't. But they really really buy into it. And if you don't believe me, listen to some of those DJ's on the radio if you wanna gauge a tad of that attitude.
You can change your interest, leave interest for GNR all togheter, totally ignore it and go to a Bon Jovi show the next month instead, but I happen to like the songs and therefore I want to see the songs being played.
I completely agree with you.
As the old band ain't coming back,
Exactly. So they're staying home.
Apparently their memories of GN'R are more precious, than it's reality in 2010.
I take the band that replaced the Chinese Democracy-band and have a good time. Might even have a beer or two. It's awesome to see Axl live.
And Thomas Eugene Stinson, don't forget that.
It beats a computer night or seeing some local piss poor band any day. Then next month, I go to Sweden and see CrashDiet because they rule THAT much more than GNR anyway, but I still find time to see GNR even if I like other bands better.

America really wants to listen to GN'R play. The right one. And they'll accept nothing less. That's all they are saying. They are demanding a certain quality control for their GN'R, that the world does not. Like I said before, America was Guns N' Roses fans... apparently the world were Axl Rose fans.
There's nothing wrong with that. But it isn't because Americans are stupid, or spoiled. If anything America is not spoiled, it's burned. ALOT of this attitude people have about Guns N' Roses was brought on completely and solely by W. Axl Rose. The American people feel that Axl Rose has mistreated them, disrespected them, from late starts to riots to cancelled shows to hatred of former loved band members, and not given them, as a music fan and consumer what they demand. So they don't go to his concerts. Simple as that.
That's the beauty of free enterprise. Guns N' Roses doesn't have a tariff on it. The audience can call Guns N' Roses whatever we want, and in the U.S. Guns N' Roses ceased to exist after the Sympathy For The Devil single in 1994.
If Axl wants that to change - call Slash. It's that purely simple. He's obviously not willing to do that, and thus the people aren't willing to give him money. If Axl doesn't want to make money in the states, that's his choice, seems pretty goddamned dumb if you ask me. Because if the states will pay him tons of money for that, the world will be 5x more.
