Re: GNR tour dates in Canada?
Arenas vs Theatres...
Well.
A theatre = 1 or 2 thousand, maybe capacity. That's a big ass theatre. 1 person more than 2,000 and they can't get in.
An arena = 5-10 thousand in ticket sales, 20,000 capacity.... Who cares if it's not full, besides fans pissing about the old days? Anyone who can come can buy a ticket and come.
If you then paper the show - half-off, free, buy 4 get 8 free, whatever - the venue still pulls in people it can sell beer to, more merchandise still get's sold, and there's a few more cars they can sell a parking pass to. That's gravy. A theatre is dealing with the SAME fixed costs, with much LESS opportunity for revenue for all involved.
What matters is how many tickets you needed to sell to make it worthwhile.
90 percent of a 2,000 theatre < 50 percent of a 15,000 arena.
Good points. That's probably the way GNR management is viewing the situation. And they can spin the numbers anyway they want to make it look good. People on the boards or who go to the shows may take notice that the arena was half full, but people who read the reviews will see SELL OUT and think it's a pretty big deal. Regardless of if they have to give away tickets, block off areas, have seat fillers, whatever the case may be.
I've also read about tickets being given away for concerts but I've never experienced that myself. I've paid all those ridiculous charges for tickets in the past, if people are giving them away I'll gladly take them to boost attendance figures.
And I highly doubt any NEW songs will be played, but I would expect more, if not most/all of the CD songs to be played. At least on a rotational basis. I mean Ron has mentioned looking forward to playing Shackler's and others. DJ has mentioned playing This I Love. So I'd say it's a fair bet we'll get to hear a lot of the album. At least I hope.
Re: GNR tour dates in Canada?
I'm planning on going to the London show. The problem is I have to pay off a big bill before the end of the year. That won't be a problem, but I won't be getting tickets on Friday. I'll have to buy them later through stubhub or somewhere.
London is 3 1/2 hours from my house. Not a bad road trip, but I'll need to buy the enhanced drivers license too. The wife and I were already planning on going to Toronto this summer so we were going to need it anyway. Also, if the tour doesn't happen, I'm not out any service fees and it gives me a chance to watch the December set lists before I make my move on tickets.
Re: GNR tour dates in Canada?
i may hit the london show as well...either that or hamilton, but i got 2 buddies planning to go to london so i might go with them...i dunno i'm still on the fence right now, $100 is alot of money for me, plus an hour ride each way and a day and a half away from work
Re: GNR tour dates in Canada?
anyway i think its fabulous that gnr is finally gonna tour, to say its a bad thing is absolutely insane, yeah this should been done a year ago but whats done is done, cant we have some optimism for a change? this is the chance at a new start! DJ will be unveiled i'm interested in seeing what he can do in gnr
all the CD songs potentially being played live finally! man this is exciting as its gonna get, if you think this is a negative time then maybe you should step away from the keyboard for a while...i have no problems with people complaining when there is a reason to voice displeasure...but to bitch cuz the band is about to tour is ridiculous
Re: GNR tour dates in Canada?
I do agree that other than a new album, this band touring is as good as its gonna get regardless of the set list. The band is capable of going through massive periods of inactivity, and I think people should try and enjoy the coming activity because you never know when its gonna end.
In fact, I think ANYONE within range of the shows from the coming tour should definitely go to at least one show. Axl's no spring chicken anymore, and you never know when it's gonna be the last.

You don't have to take any time off work - the show won't start until at least 11 and it will be done before you have to be at work the next day. Save your vacation time for something else.
