screw all y'all. where's the madagascar love? i liked that song ever since i've heard it on the rio shows. and the quotes with the bh solo are truly great.

I have a deep love of that song. I remember watching that RIO concert, and at the time I didn't really understand where Riad or Silkworms were comming from, just because I was partially in the mindset of expecting the old band sound, and also as I think the sound mix let down Riad live on that occasion, as it's awesome in studio form. But anyway, when I heard maddy it was like "Oh hell yeah...Axl still has it". Those lyrics are so inspirational, and that melody is also beautiful. It's an awesome song. As for the samples, I enjoy reading them more as lyrics than I do as sound effects in the song if that makes sence, but they do fit well. But that verse melody is where it's at for me.

I really like the 3:39 mark of Better, cool little guitar run.

It's probably Robin...

If so, even the blind squirrel finds a nut occasionally.

so anyway...whats everyone's favorite solos?

I'm going to come out and say despite my initial skepticism of the 3 (or more) guitarist approach to GNR, it's turned out to be very successful on the album to me:

Some fav guitar moments:

Chinese Democracy: As i said earlier the  solo by fink, those bends are right at the limits of what my ears can stand and i'm not a fan of the overall dissonance thing but it's so killer in that context, and the way it jumps from that to bucket's shreddy stuff. Mixing those two styles was fucking great. It's kind of like a tension and release moment!

IRS: That bucket shred is the sort of solo that's so fast it commands some attention, and was the perfect compliment to that absolutely devistating axl high note that's the highlight of the song, to me.

If the world: Might be a wierd one to list, but the solo at 3:19. From memory i'm not sure who it is...but those first few notes specificlly. If I had to list a guitar tone I'd love to capture for the rest of my life it's those opening notes...it just sounds fucking killer the way it comes in. Don't even need the whole solo, just that opening passage and tone is enough.

Twat: the fink solo is underrated I think, it's simple but suits the song, and of course bucket's melodies at the end are great. I do like the guitars on this track but as i've said earlier - twat to me is about those superhigh axl vocals. might not be for everyone but to me it's pretty much my favourite moment in any song ever. That's a huge call but damn if i don't feel that way sometimes. Anyway got to give the tars some love cos they interact with those vocals well.

There's some other great moments on guitar too.

I've been listening to This I Love quite a lot recently and for me its about his mother. I know it was allegedly begun years ago about Dylan but I believe its more likely the piano score was begun then and the lyrics were created much later, it could be two-fold though.
The way I listen to it is like an ode to his mum, who I presume died of cancer,  and may have withheld her illness from him. Its only speculation but thats my interpretation, I'd love to know the truth. From what I've read they mended their relationship and Axl holds his family dear and I cant help but think this is his way of cleaning the slate for calling his mum a cunt in Bad Obsession. Its such a sad song and the child like lyrics are perfect for a child to mother type interpretation of love. But the two fold theory I have also means it could have the child like rhyming because it was aimed at Dylan.
Whatever it is, its stil very deep and powerful.

its a highlight of the album if you ask me....that scream is insane and he sustains it for like 13-14 seconds ... i bet i can teven hold my breath that long let alone scream at the same time 16

also this verse has always grabbed me by the balls and shook me around....

I bet you think I'm doing this all for my health,
I shoulda looked again babe at somebody else
Feelin' like I've done way more than wrong
Feelin' like I'm livin' inside of this song
Feelin' like I'm just too tired to care
Feelin' like I've done more than my share
Could it be the way I've carried on
Like a broken record for so long
And I do

IRS is a track i've always felt got an unfair rep

back to scraped that fuck tune is intense....the bass is fucking bad ass...a bet that would hurt the hands to keep that up...the high pitched hamronizing throughout is pretty sweet as well ....

Word.

I don't believe in the least this album is "An Ode To Steph" as many seem to think

I've said multiple times on here that I don't like when people insist any lyrics are about one specific thing.  Especially something that was in the production stages for as long as this one.  Olorin's interpretation of TIL is a fantastic example of how you can approach things from different angles.

I think what you could call this album is "An Ode to Loss" if you wanted to.

Yeah, that Axl scream/Bucket solo is definitely a highlight of the entire discography. It still gives me chills. For those few seconds, it is pure magic. The cut and paste nature takes nothing away from it. Vocals probably recorded in 98-99, solo in 2001-02. Who cares. Just the fact Bucket was able to walk in there and convey musically what Axl was achieving vocally shows the immense talent of both men, and if anyone wants to see the potential chemistry these two had, look no further than that.

Even if Axl had wanted to remove Bucket from the album, he would have left that in because NOBODY else could have topped that.

edit: listening to the demo now, and it just slays. Its the song at its purest form. Sort of like a Pitman/Stinson mix as they can both easily be heard.

If the moggs to this track ever leak, someone is gonna create a mind blowing version of this song.

that part always gets me going Neemo. It's one of the most energetiv and hardest moments on the album.
