If anything on CD is "out there" from a music standpoint, it's Shackler's Revenge in my opinion.  Even though most of the album doesn't feel like classic GnR (ouside of most of TWAT), most of it has a GnR sound to it (admittedly mostly due to Axl).  TIL is classic Axl - not sure how anyone could think it was amazing that he wrote that song.

Absolutely.  The first time I heard Shackler's I was like "what the hell is this?"  Not that I didn't like it, it was just completely unexpected.  It was catchy as hell though and quickly became ingrained in my head.  I'd throw "If The World" into that category too. Maybe a little less than Shackler's but it doesn't sound like you'd expect GNR to sound for sure.  Friends of mine are often surprised to find out it's them.  Of course once they hear Axl it's a dead giveaway, but the funky intro throws them off a bit.  A friend of mine just recently saw Body of Lies and after he finished he texted me asking if I knew there was a new GNR song in the movie.  Did I know?  Who does he think he's dealing with?  He said it fit the movie quite well.

"Street of Dreams" and "This I Love" are really deep and emotional songs.  You can just feel the pain oozing out of them.  I don't have a personal story to equate but I can certainly see where you guys are coming from.

"Madagascar" was never one of my favorites, though a very solid song in its own right.  But I love seeing it within the 2002 VMA medley.  The highlight of an otherwise shoddy overall performance.  It's also one of the easier songs on CD to sing along to.  I nearly blow my voice out trying to sing TWAT, Riad, and others.

wow thanks for sharing olorin, and i'm very sorry to hear about your loss....on that pretext, i wonder if SOD is about shannon or wes arkeen or his mother....any of the above or someone else who passed away who was close to him during the long layoff time

anyway the blues is def a heart felt song and its one of my favs (as i've already said)

i am a huge fan of madagascar as well supaplex...the emotion in axl's voice on that tune is so off the deep end sad its a song to make the soul weep imo ... definately might be the closest we see to axls take on the implosion of the orig band and all the crap that came with it though i think a few songs touch on that subject on this album ... overall an album of loss

anyway back ot madagascar...i think the quotes themselves and their composition are part of the brilliance of the track, i feel the solo would prolly lose something if it was more than a background, a mood-setter a build up to triumph over the demons

anyway that track madacascar, its a picture of perfection and axl and pittman should be very proud of that accomplishment .... wanna flagship to represent the current band? maddy's the track

sorry to hear about your friend-wow.

Its cool man, suicide is an awful thing to deal with though for those left behind to carry on, especially for one so young. I think its a fitting song, for me anyway but I'm sure many others would find something in it for themselves. It doesnt matter a damn how many haters there are out there claiming Axl Rose is washed up, the man will always have an appreciative audience because he, like few others, can provide a voice for the unfortunate and downtrodden people of the world. It is and always has been his honest straightforward poetry of sadness and defiance that makes GNR such a big part of my life. There is no lyricist who comes close to Axl Rose in my life for putting into music the kind of things I empathise with, its not cause he is the greatest, but its something else, something heartfelt that exposes lesser peoples contrived pretence.

Thanks everyone, its true what Axlin08 says, Axl provides music that touches us all in unique ways and many people would be worse off without it and much better off for experiencing it.
I think using these forums can make you lose track of whats important in a band/fan relationship, but threads like this can help you find it again. When I first started using them it was about seeking like minded people who had the same powerful feelings about the music, but over the years that simplicity has become skewed and tangled in resentment somewhere, but thats not how it should be sad

Catcher In The Rye deserves a video, a good reflective one with young unknown actors and the only footage of the band being of them playing in a live setting. I'd love to play the Holdenesque character, I've got a mean hundred yard stare that deserves to be immortalised 14

"What this means to me is more than I know you believe" has always rang as super powerful to me.

We all have these things that can mean to so much to us and yet someone else can say "Let it go!" or "get over it!" and they may truly not have a remote grasp on how much it may mean to you.

So you're left with the burden of believing in something so strongly that others may even wonder why.

Yes! And the passion and emotion in his voice is absolutely sincere. I dont know how many times I've managed to listen to that song without rewinding and replaying that section, but its not many.
