Re: The Positive CD Thread
TWAT...by far the strongest song on the album for me....i'd go as far to say the strongest song i've heard in the last 10 years....with ease.
textured, layered, musical genius on so many different levels....and lyrically the most accomplished piece on the record.
Definitely. Classic guns song. The vocal performance is the best, and the guitar work is tremendous. Everything about that song works for me.
Re: The Positive CD Thread
My songs of the moment are Catcher, Scraped, Madagascar, SOD, TIL and Prostitute - those are the ones I actually turn on the stereo specifically cause I've got a hankering to blast one of them.
I've been playing Prostitute a fair bit, my wee cousin was visiting the other day and came dancing into the room when it was on. She is 14 and was dancing around saying what a cool beat it had and how awesome it sounded without having a clue who it was, when I told her it was Guns N Roses her face was a picture of shock saying "I thought they just played scary heavy metal..."
I played her a few other softer songs and she loved them, she hated the title track and Shacklers when I played them though, but I seen that coming a mile away
Re: The Positive CD Thread
yeah scraped is something amazing....its a very aggressive tune, also i love Axls vocal changeups....i'd love to see him do that live...reminds me of the different Axl voices of the AFD days
I think it will be killer live. I'm guessing the "Ay-ohs" will be a sample looped leaving Axl the freedom to belt the rest out, I think he will fucking nail it. The drums are amazing as is the rhythm guitars, in a live setting with it loud as hell I think it will be the highlight of the show for me. Riad could be pretty wicked as well, even if Axl struggles I cant wait to hear those drums and bass pounding out over the sound system.
I think Catcher In The Rye is a song that might actually sound better live than what it does on the album, another potential highlight of a live experience
Re: The Positive CD Thread
Best thing about the album to me is its lyrical content. He basically gives us a peak into his mental roller coaster in the 90s. Had the track list been tweaked a bit and they not cared about the leaks, this almost could have been a concept album.
Musically, the highlights for me are Buckethead's guitar work on TWAT, IRS, and Sorry. Love Tommy's bass on IRS and Riad, but unfortunately its a tad buried in the final mix. As far as the new guys adding their finishing touch, only Ron's contribution to the title track should have stayed. I love the demo, but he definitely takes the song to a place it was previously unable to go. So kudos on that.

Re: The Positive CD Thread
Great thread idea...although I loved the album since it came out..i've really rediscovered it in the last few days and been listening to it heaps. Happened because I stumbled across some old clips i had of live shows, from the 06 tour, and I realised I really like how well some of these songs intigrate into the set list (eg...Nightrain, Chinese Democracy, Paradice Cirty was cool). And how passionate Axl seems to look during IRS and a couple of the others.
Anyway, this is the kind of album to me where I end up loving every song, but go in cycles, where at one moment i'll be obsessed with a track for a few weeks, then move on to another from the same album, then after a few weeks go back to the first batch and so on.
Some moments I particularly love:
* There was a Time @ 3:52 "I would do anything for you" - that vocal passage gives me chills, appart from the sheer awesomeness of Axl's ability to sing that high, it's the emotion in his voice, like it's not just a dude screaming high, there's so much feeling in each word, it's all real. I fucking love it. And of the part where it repeats at the end. And of course the solo. But it's that vocal line that pushes into some kind of spiritual experience for me.
* Chinese Democracy @ @2:19 and 2:51 "Even with your iron fist" - the layering of the superhigh Axl over the top that gives it a somewhat supernatural sound to that line. I can't help but try and mimic that sound whenever i'm singing in the car or something.
* Chinese Democracy @ 3:07 - the blending of fink's dissonance thingie, those bends that are almost painful but seem to work exactly there, to that nice shreddy killswitch buckethead solo. It's just cool. I also love the little runs bucket is doing before fink's solo over the the "all they got", sounds like some crazy legato stuff, but it's pretty cool.
I could find hundreded of moments I love, so i think i'll return to this thread from time to time with new ones rather than mosting 2000 at once!!
Re: The Positive CD Thread
I love all the songs so I could make an endless post, but I'll limit it to one song for now. I loved "Street of Dreams" back when I first heard it in 2001 back when it was known as "The Blues". I hadn't followed GNR too closely for a few years but I checked around for some new tunes as I had seen they played a few shows featuring new material. Liked the song instantly and it still holds up to this day, 9 years later. I like the different intro on the album track. And as is the case with most of the ballads, you can hear the passion/pain in Axl's voice.
Re: The Positive CD Thread
yeah the blues is a killer track...listening too it right now actually
to me the solo on it is robin's highlight on the album...again its another track that Tommy shines on imo
the "what this means to me..." is among my favorite parts on the album...i love that verse its brilliant, and sung beautifully
"What this means to me
Is more than I know you'd believe
What I thought of you now
has cost more than it should for me
What I thought was true before
Were lies I couldn't see
What I thought was beautiful
Is only memories"
