Re: The Current Line Up
For me, as a guitarist, I have a stronger focus on guitars than an "average joe" listner, so I would be still interested in what this group did sans Axl, although, obviously Axl's an incredible vocalist and so i'm glad he is part of the equation.
But that's just it. I'm not trying to argue with you, but I could name just about any 3 (or 2) guitarists, and would I be interested? Probably. Curiously interested I suppose.
Take Kim Thayill (Soundgarden), and the guitarist from the Black Crowes, and the guitarist from Screaming Trees. Yes, I'm interested. Take James Iha (Pumpkins), Jerry Cantrell, and hell Mick Mars. There, I'm interested. Take the guitarist from Hootie, the guy from Matchbox 20, and put Dave Matthews in, hey I'm interested.
Assembling musicians would be loads of fun, but it's all a dime a dozen. Personally I'd be more curious about all those I named above, to see what they produce, than DJ Ashba, BBF, & Fortus.
An interesting album which did something similar to this is Mike Watt, Ballhog or Tugboat". It mixed guys from PJ, RHCP, Beasties, Lemonheads, Henry Rollins etc all together. Some really good songs on there too. It'd be cool if Slash's solo album did this. (For example, Flea, Eddie Vedder, Tommy Lee & Slash on one song, then Rob Thomas, Jeff Ament, Zakk Wylde, Slash & Matt Cameron on another)
Re: The Current Line Up
Not a huge fan of the current lineup, but as long as Tommy is involved, I'm in. Big plus if we can get Brain on skins for a tour. Axlin08, Brain has it all, groove-skill-everything. Go see him outside of Gnr, he throws down-funk, blues, metal, rock, ..complete badass. Adler is a complete clown compared to him...in every way.:/
ps I don't care what Izzy said about Adler 20 years ago. A fuckin' monkey could have played drums from 85-90 and there would be no difference.:peace:
Izzy was right though. It wasn't so much Adler's prescence on drums, as much as it was his sound. He was not a very gifted drummer, but he brought the right kind of sound to the songs.
Matt Sorum & Brain are simply drum machines. Sorum is ham fisted, i'll admit. Brain has actual talent, and is a great technical drummer.
But i've never felt GN'R needs that. I've heard Brain's stuff with Bucket, and I know he can be groovy & funky on songs, but NONE of that is brought out in GN'R, and if it isn't then why have him?
Frank on the other hand is not as gifted a drummer as Brain, but Frank brings the right sound to GN'R imo, like Adler did. I can't explain it precisely, the feel is different, and more rock.
I think what i'm arguing for in favor of Frank, is what alot of people argue in favor of Slash over Buckethead, in an ironic twist.

I'm just being honest. I see nothing in this group of characters. They're all skilled in their own right, almost 3 shredders on guitar (personally I see that as a problem). Talented yes. A band I'm waiting to hear new material from? No. They'd have to prove it to me first by releasing something of their own first.
I agree. Take Axl out and NOBODY would've ever heard of thos guys. Nothing against them but as it stands right now, this lineup leaves me feeling very indifferent.
Nobody heard of The Replacements? Nobody heard of SixxAM? I know the guys aren't household names, but you're making it seem like Axl went out on the streets and picked the first guys he saw.
Of course I had heard of the Replacements. Sixx AM? Seriously? Nope! And what I meant in my post is that nobody would've heard of Stinson, Fortus, Bumble, Brain or Frank, Dizzy, Pittman and DJ Ashba as a BAND. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be a huge act, and that they'd probably be an opening act known to some but still unknown to the majority. Just because I have heard of The Mats don't mean I'd know what Stinson would be up to. Man this guy was working selling ink cartridges before joining GNR. And if it weren't for Stinson being in GNR I wouldn't always know what Paul Westerberg is up to and I don't care. And don't ask me what the other remaining guys in the Mats are up to as I have no clue. In closing I'll give you a HUGE example of what I mean. Without looking it up on the net can you seriously tell me what Jason Newsted formerly of Metallica is up to now? I liked Newsted when he was in Metallica but seriously I have no clue what he's up to.

I'll give you The Replacements, and I'm sure GnFnRAxl would too as he was making more of a blanket statement, but come on. SixxAM?! Get real. Nobody heard of them or cares about them. And while The Replacements were a great, well known band, no one cares that their bassist is in GnR. It's not a selling point. It's an "Oh I didn't know that".
Agreed. As a mater of fact I don't know the names of the other guys in that band other than Stinson and Paul. Even Tommy's brother I can't remember his 1st name.

I knew he died. But it doesn't change my point. Not everyone knows what the Mats guys are up to or their names. It's not a selling point. So if not for Axl the current GNR lineup as a band would be unknown to all or to most anyways. And I still give you my example cause I know there are a lot of Metallica fans. What is Newsted up to? Some may know but a lot of people have no clue. Even with GNR. To Joe and Jill public Izzy has mostly disappeared from the radar. Joe and Jill public won't be able to name you one Izzy solo song. And Izzy was an important member of GNR.

In contrast I do think if BH, the guitarist from NIN, the bassist from Replacements and drummer from Primus got together, in 99 or 02, there would have been interest. even without Axl. Had Al Jourgenson, Dave Gahan or Robert Smith been the singer, there would still have been moderate interest & following.
That's what I'm getting at. Now, it's the replacements replacements. (Referring to the AFD/UYI replacements, not Tommys old band)

I'll give you this. That band would've had moderate success even with a lesser known singer than those you mentioned cause Dave Gahan and Robert Smith are huge names. Even Jourgensen is something pretty big and the best choice of the three. But we're discussing the current lineup. Before GNR Fortus, Bumblefoot and DJ Ashba were unknown to me. Ferrer was unknown as well. And it's not a given that all would know Pitman and as far as Dizzy goes, I don't think he'd garner that much attention. So this lineup would need one hell of a lead singer to be known by Joe and Jill public. The three you mentioned would be good choices. While the 99 lineup could've made itwith a lesser known singer.
