Re: Terminator Salvation

I thought it was average. Now, I'm not a fan of Michael Bay stuff like Transformers so some of the action sequences just weren't my thing, but it just didn't do much for me. The beginning felt forced and I never felt like I had a good idea of what the status of Connor in society was, or how well the humans were doing in their fight. The character of Marcus Wright is the only one that gets good development or explanation, and he was well done except his voice seemed to switch between accents at different times. The movie got better as it got closer to the end, but all the references to past Terminator films were cringe-worthy.

It had nice pace and was founded on a good concept I think, but it lacks the emphasis on character that successful reboots have had. It's ok, on par with T3 probably, but it just wasn't everything it could've been.

I did like hearing a bit of Rooster (the AIC song) in it. That was pretty sweet.

If you've seen all 3 Terminators you should see this one and make your own opinion, but I don't expect to be seeing it again.

I thought Christian Bale was the worst part of the movie. Overall it was ok... if only because it made fun of it's self a bit IMO.

And I agree with Communist China, the intro was full of so many stupid explosions. Not to mention some of the characters were so bad. That little stupid kid? The guy in charge of the resistance?

Marcus was done pretty well for a big budget movie that clearly was made just for money an not really as part of the Terminator legacy

Way better than 3 though. And it got better near the end. Other than one cool chase scene the entire first hour was pretty bad

I haven't seen the movie but his performance looks good from the trailers. What exactly was wrong with it?

I'd like to know that as well. I'm seeing other critics referencing that too. That they expected Bale to carry it like the Batman films, and that Bale and even Bryce Dallas Howard are just kind of there.

That it's Sam Worthington's film.

Re: Terminator Salvation

Bale has just about no emotional range (in this movie). It's like a bad parody of his Batman. He yells, he yells louder, he shoots something, he yells, he listens to a tape of his mom, he yells and shoots at things.

I read a week or two ago that they wanted Bale to be Marcus Wright and originally Connor's part was small. At Bale's insistence they gave him the role of Connor and beefed the part up. I'd believe that. He's not a very interesting character in this, and is just a standard action hero.

To be completely honest, John Connor has NEVER been all that interesting.

Edward Furlong's Connor in T2, was simply there to be child sidekick to Arnold's Terminator.

Nick Stahl's Connor in T3 was simply some derelict spinning his wheels since his mother's death, and that Stahl simply tried to play an older version of Furlong's Connor, which makes since as when the script was written Furlong was signed to reprise Connor.

And even in the now-cancelled Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, John was the least interesting character on the show. There's even a back history on Cameron. The most interesting characters were Sarah, Cameron, and Derek Reese.

When you really sit down and look at the John Connor character, I think his 'build up' by Kyle Reese in T1, was far bigger and more epic, then the character has EVER become in later films and TV series. It just hasn't happened, and frankly, if Bale can't pull it off... it's a character thing. Not an actor thing, 'cause Bale can act.

I really hope this film is better than what's being said right now. It's looking more and more like they should've just stopped at T2, and forgot the sequels and TV series (even tho that wasn't half-bad).

Not necessarily a character thing so much as a writing thing. If the writers turned him into a one-note character in Terminator Salvation, like you said that's not Bale's fault as an actor. Perhaps in the sequel(s) to Terminator Salvation they will build the character into the epic leader that he's described as in the first Terminator movie...in which case, I have no doubt that Bale has the gravitas to effectively present the character assuming it is well-written.

And that's the key. T4 will make tons of money, but if Bale gets slammed critically, will he get standoff-ish to T5?

Bale didn't really want to do T4, but they threw a ton of money at him.

I believe when McG first approached Bale, he told him to "fuck off". McG own words...:haha:
