Re: Chinese Democracy Chart Positions Thread
It don't really matter, your all gonna find out for yourselves. I think the writing is on the wall--Axl moved on from this project--mentally, physically, and emotionally back in September when this was turned in. He is onto the next chapter, and is likely putting every bit of energy into this. Don't forget, this guy is ambitious--he is not going to go down not swinging the bat again--once one almost reachs the summit, every waking moment is going to be spent trying to get to the top. GNR almost made it there in 1990-91, they want to go down as the greatest, and they are still relatively young enough to do that.
To me, Chinese Democracy was a necessary step. Axl and co. learned much, much about new production techniques, what works, what doesn't. At the end of the day, this will teach the band valuable lessons which will make them better in the long run.
I don't think he would just walk away; his reputation is on the line. But apparently also his pride. Something is rotten with the way this whole release has unfolded. There is a bitter reek of 'got paid so why bother' around this record.
I am willing to bet GnR will not a client of UMG in the near future.

That would be a bold move. The GNR discography can be milked in the future with possible bonus material. Not sure why they would want to give that up. A two disc GH(or even a box set) with some material from the old band's vault would sell more than this album.
I hope they think long and hard before making such a decision.
Re: Chinese Democracy Chart Positions Thread
There's only one thing at this point, that will keep GN'R signed with Universal, and that's if they bring them something, and WE ALL know what that is.
Axl also burnt so many bridges, that he can forget losing ties to UMG, and just picking up camp and going elsewhere. Who'd want to work with him? The dude's 'craziness', whether by legitimacy or perfectionism, has played out in the court of public opinion. Everybody knows.
The only people he'd probably get to work with him are no-names, looking to make a name for themselves, and would his ego allow him to work with amateurs?
There's one decision that saves his future. It's only a question of now, which way he'll go.
Edit: James makes an interesting point. Would they keep ties, just to stay tied to that back catalog and future releases?

The only lesson Axl's learned, is that he was WRONG the last 15 years.

Re: Chinese Democracy Chart Positions Thread
Their contract is up, the CD debt has been recouped, and the fact that Axl has gone AWOL at this critical juncture may not bode for a re-up on their contract.
I seriously believe Axl is trying to scuttle the profitability of this record as a form of spite

Re: Chinese Democracy Chart Positions Thread
I am sure Universal has heard the 10 songs Izzy and Duff wrote in 1995, along with the 12 songs Slash, Duff, and Izzy wrote in 2003, not to mention the stuff Axl and Izzy wrote in 1994, and the stuff Duff, Axl, Slash and Matt wrote in 94-96.
UMG just renewed their contract with GNR, and CD exclusive was part of the deal, as were publishing rights with Duff and Slash.

If that's true, then Axl needs to send a million-dollar credit limit over to Azoff, and his favorite "escort" service in LA.
I'm starting to respect Axl just for the fact he's a fucking bandit.

Not sure you are right about that, but if you have the announcement of the new deal, I"ll look at it.
EDIT: I don't see an announcement of an extension of the recording contract anywhere.
The BB exclusive paid off the $13 million in CD debt. As for the status of the old recordings, my understanding is that they locked in the Vault. I would expect a legal battle could ensue if GnR is not under contract with UMG and bolts to a new label.

Here is the press release
http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stori … 478&EDATE=
No mention AT ALL of an extension of their record deal.
Re: Chinese Democracy Chart Positions Thread

Are we sure about this? I don't remember any statements regarding GNR's status with Uni. Are you basing that on info from the old lawsuits? If so, you've got a great memory.
