One of the unequivocal minds at mygnr has proposed that maybe the lack of promotion is due to this strategy:
-Release CD with little or even less promotion; that way the album cannot be a commercial, financial, artistic, etc., failure.

It would certainly make some sense, when you factor in the, '(It's better) if it's not released, then it can not have failed; and our money can not be wasted', line that many Universal/record company peeps were employing during this project's endurance.

You didn't tell me about this Body of Lies thing.  Yes, I agree that plans can change at a milisecond's notice in GN'R's 'world'.  But it had been long known that the band had been looking at putting some music on an upcoming movie - Terminator 3 in 2003; the slightly more successful Da Vinci Code in 2006; Zodiac was mentioned; Chapter 27 with Jared Leto (damn, this would have been fucking perfect to stick 'CITR' on!); before finally settling on this film - which I had admittedly not heard of until now.

Also there was What Dreams May Come I think it was in 1998.  I saw this film when it came out and thought a UYI-like track would have fit it perfectly.

Oh and of course Black Hawk Down in - was it 1999 too?

AR with $13mill already invested its a commercial failure...there needs to be clever marketing in place to recoup that cost...but do we really need to rehash that old conversation again? hmm

Oh, and the movie (I don't know if it's out yet) Death Racer or something is using 'WTTJ' as one of it's promo themes.  How often can this track be used in films/TV shows/etc.?  Just never loses it's appeal - and the only song on CD that comes close to this in my view is the song 'CD' itself.

I'm not sure if I've seen it mentioned anywhere before.  It certainly is an odd strategy - though kind of similar to the big-selling AFD when I think about it.  Release; and let the buyers do the rest.  Trouble is, today it's downloaders.  Hmmm....

CD will never come close to WTTJ

anyway WTTJ has been released on 21 different products

I HIGHLY don't see CD 'just dropping' or 'just leaking'.

The album is gonna be a critical failure, no matter what. There's no way to win. But Universal slitting their own throat for profit just because of 'image'. No... no fucking way. If they knew it'd make money, they'd have Bret Michaels redo all of Axl's vocals. Labels will DO ANYTHING.

If it's profitable, they don't give a fuck, and CD is bound to make SOME money. The Best Buy-exclusive makes the most sense, because Best Buy buys the albums up front, and depending on the amount they buy, the label & GN'R know that they are guaranteed the purchase of 3-4 million units up front.

It's coming together, and starting to make more sense day by day.

That's the score for the film. Strictly instrumental. Varese Sarabande rarely releases, if ever, anything other than scores.

If the new GN'R song will appear on the Body Of Lies soundtrack, it'll be a seperate release containing songs from the film, which will - guaranteed - be with another label than Varese. Which if you found a 'various artists' listing somewhere, the film might be getting a dual soundtrack release. One with the soundtrack, one with the score, and this one is the score.

Update: I've been told by someone who claims to have seen an advance/press screening (of which I've attended many, this would be the right timeframe) and confirms that there is indeed a Guns tune played over the end credits. No other details as of yet, including whether or not it was even a new song or just an old standby. But what I'm being told by fairly reliable sources I've used for other things in the past, there is a Guns song in this movie.

Maybe the GNR camp played us.  And if they did, kudos to them for pulling it off.

This is shaping up well.  9

Does anyone else think Russel Crowe looks a lot like Ben Stein in the picture Neemo posted?  Just a thought.
