Re: Velvet Revolver Still Mulling New Frontman
If either VR album was released as a GnR album, people would be all over them as being great.
I think they're both good albums, but Libertad was a giant step backward and that's not what you want out of a sophomore effort.
In related news. Back in 2006 I went to see GNR at MSG with some friends. Soon after that I tried to get the same group to go see VR, but that didn't work out. I guess around that time one of my friends bought a VR CD. He sent me this text message this morning.
I just listened to the velvet revolver cd i got way back when we went to guns n roses...they really suck

You're out of your mind.
If those albums were released as GN'R albums, I would've officially been done with them. Concerts, internet, future albums, the whole thing.
Has it ever occured to anyone in here that Axl, maybe, just maybe... might be a better artist? The funny thing is faldor mentions that story, and I actually had issues with people in 2006 that had attended VR shows, to go to a GN'R show, and they refused stating "VR is more GNR than GNR".
Re: Velvet Revolver Still Mulling New Frontman
I can't believe there is a debate as to who the better artist is. Its cut and dry. Slash has been living in the 80s for 20 years . AT LEAST Axl tried to do something different with the way he approach4d the music on chinese democracy. You won't see slash and duff churn out a song like "if the world" or "Madagascar". In the words of Robert Plant. They "Live on former Glories so long ago and Gone"

To this I say "Thank God." Trying to do something different just for the sake of trying to do something different is far less intelligent than sticking with something that works. Axl has been living in the 90s and released a 1995 album in 2008. Don't label him as some superhero that conquered a new genre. He put out dated material of his own.
Re: Velvet Revolver Still Mulling New Frontman
I actually agree with Buzz in a sense.
When VR started getting Contraband together, and released it in 2004, it's whole point was to be radio-ready mainstream rock. It was a really shittastic album, typical mainstream, 2-3 good singles, one a ballad, and nothing more. Killed their credibility imo, despite going double-plat.
When new GN'R finally got out CD, granted it was a 1995 album released in 2008, but I think if anything holds it's back, it's the fact it's so UNORIGINAL. The history of Guns N' Roses was that of a 'throwback band', with an original sound, who released a ground breaking album in 1987, that is largely considered by many to be quite possibly the greatest rock album ever recorded. Even UYI had a feeling of originality. But CD smacks of Axl, sitting around in a room for 15 years, trying to be "hip" and get with the times, stealing influences and sounds from all other places, to piece together a modern Guns N' Roses record, instead of just CREATING HIS OWN modern Guns N' Roses record. The rockers are arena-rock styled industrial, and the ballads try to be Illusion III.
The only difference between Axl vs. Slash, is I think Axl is far more talented. I was VERY impressed with Duff's "Sick" album with Loaded. Very modern, but a vintage punk flair. Is it CD? No. Is it's memorable, it probably won't be. But the man has got skillz.

Likewise, if Slash played the guitars as they stand now on CD, people's heads would be exploding.
"OMG, Slash has still got it! That solo on TWAT is so epic, so cock-stiffening! You can hear the emotion just oozing from every note!"
