Re: Report: New AC/DC Album To Be Wal-Mart Exclusive

I thought my joke wasn't too coherent when I posted it, so I'll clarify here - every AC/DC album is pretty much the same. I see no need for them to make new music, and I doubt they've got their first good record in 17 years up their sleeves. That combined with the Wal-Mart only bullshit means I won't buy this record.
Gotcha. After I posted that, I thought about it more and figured thats what you meant.
In other news I was talking about this with a guy at work yesterday and he says "Wow. How times change huh? In 1980, the talk was 'have you heard this AC/DC band? I heard it means Anti-Christ/Devil's Children!' and now in 2008 the talk will be 'hey honey look! I got the new AC/DC while I was getting bread at Wal-Mart!'"
That reminds me of a book my father read, which claimed KISS stood for 'Knights in the Service of Satan'.
Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if Gene Simmons had sold his soul to the devil somewhere early in his career.
Whatever you guys say I'm still excited about the return of Angus and Malcolm. Probably more than Axl at this point.

Oh don't get me wrong, although I'm not an AC/DC fan I can certainly see where someone could be. I think it's cool that people are looking forward to this album. I'm just not sure how I feel about these type of deals yet. I'm a Garth fan and I really didn't like his exclusive deal w Wal-Mart either.
I kind of see your point, if Guns new album was to be distributed exclusively through Tesco or Saisbury in the UK I might share the same sentiment. But to me as long as the corporates don't start controlling the musical integrity of bands, then I don't really see the problem how they distribute. I mean whats the diffrence between a deal with Apple to Walmart, one has the monopoly of online music the other general retailing. To the bands they just want the best deal for the band and their business.
Having said all that I think what Trent is doing is very cool

I'm glad Ac/Dc don't feel the need to change their style. I mean bands get big for a reason - what they do sounds good - then they always have to go and fuck that up by playing in some other style where its probably ok...but not at 'best in the world level'.
Take Zakk - I fucking love the dude...but like you go to a BLS show and he ends up behind a paino. I mean hell - if you play guitar like Zakk - one of the top players in the world - no one wants to hear you play keys (although he's actually really good at both). But respect to Zakk that he doesnt go make a modern rock record and keeps in his leathers etc.
Anyway...AC/DC do always make the same stuff...but that's why its good...its a winning formula and you know what your going to get. I find I dont like all of their songs...most albums only have 1 or 2 that I like...but hell...when they get a good one its a damn damn good one!

Bands doing exclusive deals where each store gets a special version of the album(bonus track, different artwork, etc.) is understandable, but only selling your product through one store is something I cant support.
If Chinese Democracy is only sold at Walmart, I wont be buying it.

Why? Albums only being sold through one shop isn't something that's really done here, why is it so bad, does the store crank the price up on the album if they're the only one's selling it?

You could always import it.
I really don't get the issue. Plenty of products are sold through single lines of distribution.
From GNR's point of view
Walmart only deal - shift 2 -3 million
Normal deal - shift 1 million
Why wouldn't they?

It plays a role in monopolizing the industry. One store should never have that much power over a product unless its their own. Years ago, the Stones pulled some shit like this where one of their products was through Best Buy only. I shop at Best Buy and its one of my favorite stores. I didn't buy it on principle.
People use the Eagles as some sort of litmus test. They hadn't released a new album since The Long Run. That album would have went multiplatinum had it been sold only in crackhouses.
