Goddamnit. Now you guys have me really wanting one of those Yamaha kits!!

Are they way less expensive then the Rolands?

That specific one is $1000.  I thought it seemed better than the roland at that price range.  If you moved up to the $1500 one I thought the Roland seemed better though(the Yamaha is the same module as the $1000, but with some better pads).

Then the highest end Yamaha (that I saw anyway) ran about $3000, while Roland upper end Roland's had, I think, about 3 price points slightly lower or higher than that.

Another big thing that made me go with the Yamaha is that I read that all of their drum sounds are sampled/recorded actual drum sounds, whereas the Rolands are completely electronically produced sounds.

I'm not sure about the lowest end kits (the Roland is $750, and the yamaha is $700), I only looked at them long enough to see that the next step up wasn't much more espensive.

Hope that helps.

Yeah.  The Yamaha kits tend to be cheaper overall.  Though after lots of playing in different music stores, I never really liked the feel of the Yamaha kits.  The mesh heads on the Rolands have a much nicer drum feel than those rubber pads do, and also give you a lot more control over dynamics, rim shots and stuff.  Besides, Neil Peart uses them, so that's enough to convince me.

Here's a little bit of Omar Hakim on the Rolands.

And we've now officially hijacked this thread.  I didn't know there were so many drummers here.  Maybe we oughtta make a drumming thread.
