I've got some debt, but it's hard to avoid. Student loans? How the hell are you supposed to pay for college? It's not affordable for most people.

I'm very lucky to have been able to attend an institution that has an excellent program with very low tuition fees.  Cost of living is low around here too.  A lot of my friends are thousands and thousands of dollars in debt though.  I was very lucky to complete a co-op degree in a field that has a very high demand.  Without the co-op placements, I would be in the same position as all my friends.  I had some help from my parents in my first co-op term (I was able to live at home for 4 months), but other than that, I've been able to pay my own way through... I'm happy to be graduating debt free after five years in University.  I know that if I went away for school or didn't do a co-op degree, I wouldn't be in this position.  Also, I've lived with roommates, used public transportation, and held down part time jobs while I've been in school...

I certainly try to encourage people to live thrifty while getting educated and do degree programs with paying co-op positions.  That way, while you still might need a loan, you'll be able to pay it off over a shorter term.

My girlfriend's in a rough situation... her loan payment is going to be ridiculous (5 years of student loans).  She's a nursing student (they don't get paid for workterms), and can't hold a part time job because she has clinical 5 days a week, 9-5.  It's horrible.  Millions of people are the same way... She had dreams of going to med school, but that'd be another 8 years and she'd be hundreds of thousands in debt when she'd finish.  It's horrible.  You'd think with the Health Care crisis, the government would subsidize all of this.  If she went to med school, she'd be in her 40s or early 50s before she was finished paying her loan.  That's retarded.  How can you have kids and a mortgage and car payments on top of that?

Bri, I hear ya.....credit card debt is the killer. That and people buy houses that are too big for them or they spend more than they can afford. Of course, the predatory loan sharks shouldn't have let them borrow that much anyway. I hope all these mortgage companies go completely bankrupt. I can't stand the fact that our gov't is bailing them out because of THEIR crooked loan practices.:flame::flame:
