Re: Cops release photo of car linked to abandoned baby
Police have released a picture of a car they believe is connected to a baby girl found abandoned in a North York shopping plaza stairwell Wednesday afternoon.
Police are looking for information about this older model Ford Escort, seen in an image taken from surveillance video.
"We are actively looking for this car and doing everything we can," Staff Sgt. Don Cole said at a press conference. The car is described as a 1997 - 2000 model green four-door Ford Escort.
Authorities are appealing to the public to help them identify the girl, believed to be about eight months old.
Officers went door to door in the Leslie Street and Finch Avenue neighbourhood where the girl was found distributing posters of the child.
The baby was found by a shopper at around 12:30 p.m. At first the shopper thought the infant was a discarded doll but then the child began to cry.
The child was likely there for about two hours, according to police.
At a press conference on Thursday afternoon, police released security footage of the vehicle in the plaza parking lot before the baby is dumped in the stairwell.
"A person we can't identify as either a male or a female exits the car, checks the stairwell, opens the passenger side door, carries the infant, places the child in the stairwell, goes back to car and leaves as quickly as (they) came," Det. Keith Moxley told reporters.
Moxley said police have received calls about the suspect vehicle, but still not a single person who knows the infant has come forward.
"It's not normal where no one has come forward to say, 'That's my neighbour, that's my niece,' something to that effect," he said.
"Looking at infants that take on great suffering like this is always difficult to do."
Moxley said investigators are concerned something could have happened to the baby's parents.
Local residents said they couldn't believe anyone would abandon a baby.
"If you didn't want her you could have just given her up," said one woman.
Police said they fear the baby may have been abused as there were minor bruises on her body.
"There are scrapes and bruises, and a considerable amount of her body is involved in that," Cole said.
"I'm appealing to the parents to come forward," he continued. "Let us know who you are, let us know you're all right and this can be sorted out."
The girl is described as being black with a light complexion. She was wearing a red one-piece sleeper as well as a white sleeper with a hoodie on it when she was found. She was also wearing a pink snowsuit.
David Rivard, executive director of the Children's Aid Society of Toronto, said his agency has received more than a dozen phone calls from residents who would like to adopt the baby, but he said it is still too soon to consider placement.
"We really want the parents to come forward," Rivard said." We don't know if there are other children involved and we would want to investigate that as well."

Exactly Thank God she was found and isn't dead. They better not give this kid back to the parents. I highly doubt she was kidnapped because no one that kidnaps a baby discards it, they kidnap to keep it. Parents do this shit and considering she was abused, they sure as hell better not give her back.
Let a couple who wants to love and nuture this baby have a chance and give her a much better life then going back to hell and will either be in a life of torture or killed.
