For a 54 year old Axl Rose, he looks like one would expect.
Agreed. I don't have a problem with it. He looks normal and what is more important to me is even though we have yet to see him onstage, he is doing things he hasn't done since the 90s. A massive tour about to be unleashed, he's being talked about everywhere, and doing something unpredictable like the AC/DC thing.
This is the Axl before the Chinese era started and this is the Axl after it ended. What we are already witnessing makes the CD saga seem even more bizarre than it was. I don't think he was ever fully comfortable with it, whether it was being forced to carry the whole load himself, the label cluster fucking the project in its early years, etc. The reasons almost don't even matter anymore. We're entering a new era and the fans should enjoy it. He's in his 50s but we have a window here that can be incredible.
If I have any complaints it would be that THIS is what should have happened post CD release instead of putting together another CD lineup to drag it on for six more years.

I'd go further and say it should have happened PRE cd release...in about 2006.
Imagine those 2006 shows where Axl sounded good but with Slash and Duff rocking out with him. Then they could have polished up the CD songs for the 2008 release and the label would have liked them, then all of Slash's post solo riffs in his last 3 would also be open to GNR to work with.
Sort of criminal that if they can get their shit together now that they couldn't back then. The wastage is insane.

What we are already witnessing makes the CD saga seem even more bizarre than it was. I don't think he was ever fully comfortable with it, whether it was being forced to carry the whole load himself, the label cluster fucking the project in its early years, etc.
He was uneasy with it. That's why the oversized jerseys, the rants, the fits, the cancellations... He was as flaky as ever in 2002. As time passed, Ax apparently felt increasingly trapped with CD. His label contacts were swapped in favour of the new Interscope management and he flunked out on completing the album.
2006 was a bit different. Merck had used his position at Sanctuary to secure a $1Million/year income for Axl for the next 20 years in exchange for his share on the publishing rights of the Guns back catalogue.
Since 2004, Sanctuary had also been bankrolling the studio bill they were now generating at Curt Cuomo's. What was needed was a finalized album, so that Geffen would buckle up and gear it for release. Axl had been given two extra years to finalize CD and by 2006, Sanctuary was in dire straits, so they too moved over to wanting the album out.
We planned the tour in February, just after Axl's birthday and we were supposed to finish the album in May, before it started... we needed the money to be able to complete the album and keep the band alive... I found the money and the motivation to keep Axl and the band alive and get the record made when everyone else had given up and walked away.
Unfortunately the muse disappeared just as fast as she came and the tour started with no single at radio to support it and the album still needing two or three days of work.
The record company refused to conclude the renegotiation until we were ready to hand over the finished album and refused to prepare a marketing campaign or commission video treatments until they had it in their hands... despite the success of many of the dates on the tour the pressure on all of us became unbearable. -src
Meanwhile, band members were called back with insane retainers. The songs were rehearsed for two guitars, Axl wanted three. It went down on the wire, with Ron famously coming in two weeks before the tour. The inclusion of the third guitar was hardly a vote of confidence to the band from Ax's part, and he had equal doubts on the album itself - otherwise, he would've completed it and kissed it off.
By now, Ax's noticed what exactly Slash and Duff brought to the table. They are autonomous songwriters and could do good with the press Axl hates. He could focus on lyrics and melody without bothering much with the instrumentals; Slash and Duff got it covered. Without them, the silence is deafening and the songwriting spotty, with trial and error going into everything.
