Re: Commissioner, Women’s Shelter Call GN'R Concerts Ads 'Inappropriate'
You're telling me you didn't know about the picture being inside the first time you bought AFD?
And again, I'm not saying this because it has anything at all to do with GN'R. I'm saying it because of a picture.
I knew the picture was inside the booklet and still bought the album, but I genuinely think that's besides the point. I like the painting, I think it's cool, and if I didn't live with my girlfriend I'd probably hang a poster of it on my wall. It's an awesome piece of art.
But, I honestly can't believe this is being debated. Liking the art and supporting GNR, in my opinion, are completely seperate issues to not being able to see it from the point of view of sexually abused women who shouldn't have to see the image on buses, buildings etc (even if they do live in Vegas, Amsterdam or anywhere that condones prostitution, pornography and general nakedness ).

I've never said that the "battered women" have no right to be unappreciative of the painting. Nothing of the sort. They have every right. I just feel their "cause" is a little misguided. Again, call me insensitive. That's fine. That's just how I feel. I think this was a way for them to gain exposure for their cause. I could be wrong and it was completely done for the "right" reasons. I just don't see it that way.

The whole fuckin' place is based on SIN. Get it? SIN city. That's usually not a word that conjures up well-meaning towards women's rights.
We'll objectify them in pornography, put them up for sale as meat in prostitution, but hey... a fucking PAINTING is just too far.
COME ON
So if someone put up a Painting of Hitler next to a Jewish Temple, It should remain cause it is "Just a painting?"
WOW
Absolutely. As long as the painting depicts an actual art piece, and doesn't have the sole, and obvious attention to inflame, then yes it should stay, even next to a Jewish temple. Robert Williams painting is just that -- a painting. It's an art piece. There's alot of things going on other than rape. We don't know for sure what the painting is actually saying. It could be in defense of the girl. You don't know. It's subjective.
Now if I paint a painting of the Confederate flag, with General Robert E. Lee on the center of the stars n' bars, and put that painting on the side of a building next to a black church... the painting has no value. It's intentionally trying to incite.
See the difference?
You're assuming Robert's painting exists to glorify rape. If the painting featured a dude blowing his load on her forehead, and looking toward the viewer with a smile and a thumbs up for a job well done... THEN I would agree with you. It's a painting that glorifies rape and should be burned.

Hardly
u don't know thats inside.
if u hung it up on your wall, possibly.
see this is the type of shit I am talking about.
Just because I support the women's shelter doesn't mean I am "Anti poster"
GNR world is black and white, u are either for or against and that is bullshit.
I have no problem with the poster cause Ive never been raped or sexually assaulted.
to say someone that has been raped or sexually assaulted "SHOULDNT" have a problem is plain asinine.
So yes, womens battered shelter understandably don't like looking at it. I support and understand their reasons for wanting it taken down and yes I am still a GNR fan even though I don't agree 100 percent with everything they do.

Dude I was like 8 yrs old. Not sure I knew what rape was. Lol

Fundamentally,
The function of art is to highlight things in society.
If one has a problem with an artwork, censoring it won't remove the problem.
It only tells a lot about society and its inability to tackle the underlying issue.
Re: Commissioner, Women’s Shelter Call GN'R Concerts Ads 'Inappropriate'
Is this thing still going?
Unfortunately, yes.
I do have to interject here, too, though to say that I am not at all offended by the art. Now, if they had the art with some just blatantly derogatory text in place that called her all sorts of foul names, that might change my tune, but I think the art is just fine. Despite Will's apprehension to hang it in his house with his girlfriend, I wouldn't mind if Russ hung this in our basement. It's not over-the-sofa art, but it can work in our rock area
