Re: Bumblefoot not happy? Speculating....
BETTER
Four distinct versions of this song exist; the earliest take, from the late 90s, showcases Robin Finck's guitar work and has a choppy feel. The first version to leak to the internet appeared in 2006, with an altogether smoother sound; Finck's solo was excised and replaced by Buckethead's psychedelic shred guitar. Subsequent leaks of the track in 2007 saw Finck's solo reinstated as a bridge section, along with grittier rhythm tracks.[/i]
Don't mean to be a dick...but I think they're confusing Better with IRS.
Where is the fink solo in the bridge? Better has that metal bridge and then bucket shred with the masturbating robots, and then there's an outro solo from fink.
Contrast with IRS...which had a smooth first version with fink solo, then a rockier version with a bucket solo, then the final with the fink solo added back as a bridge solo.
They're talking of the Wrong song IMO. Or is it me?

Re: Bumblefoot not happy? Speculating....
Also...in my (controversial) opinion...sorry is the least interesting song on CD...really don't understand why it's so many people's favourite.
Better - I think was one of the best bests for a single because while it's a bit odd....Axl sounds like Axl....and he does it early on. Hit that verse and you know it's Axl. Reason we jizzed over the leak IMO....
I like songs like TWAT more but like Buzz says...much like estranged...just not really single material due to the lighthearted nature of the radio and the shirt attention spans of listeners.

Re: Bumblefoot not happy? Speculating....
The amazing thing is that Better is actually a song off the Sean Beavan sessions.
The material leaked on Antiquiet is believed to come from a 14-track CD that was, effectively, a 'finished' version of the album circa 2006; Classic Rock has heard the majority of another 'finished' version of the album dating from the early 2000s.'

BETTER
Originally leaked to the internet in February 2006, this poprock track later appeared (briefly) on a Harley-Davidson ad. A more synth-heavy cut circulated on GN'R fan sites in February 2007, while a third version with additional backing vocals appeared on the Antiquiet.com website in June 2008.

That description to me doesn't sound like they're talking about Better, it sounds like a description of IRS. Makes sense with the mention of Buckets solo replacing Finck's one, and Robin's being moved to earlier in the song.

Haha, I just posted the same thing!
Re: Bumblefoot not happy? Speculating....
Better was definitely the song where, post 2002, we all nodded and said "Ahh, he can sing". It's also a song you can play and people would say "ooh, this is what he was doing - this is different, but it's also good."
Sorry sort of sets a tone and tells a story. More of a statement. "Sorry, but Axl's Not Apologizing" ..you can hear that buzzline in the air. But no press, interviews, and they didn't put that out as a single. The song could even been radio and TMZ fodder about it 'being about Slash?'.
What also hurt was NO music videos, of any sort, being out. That knocked out YouTube and Facebook. MySpace streaming was a dead-end and it didn't facilitate building or exploiting curiosity, it just lost the plot.
Axl didn't even do the modern equivalent of a MTV fax explaining the songs or album until forum chats, which, uh, aren't the same thing and happened way too late.
Re: Bumblefoot not happy? Speculating....
Sorry has good moments, great music, bad lyrics.
The CD single they played on the radio had an edited intro. It charted pretty well. It wasn't a bad single. And this is coming from soneone who thought it would be a stupid choice. And I still think TWAT should have been the lead single.
And please, Smells Like Teen Spirit was repetitive, you could barely understand the lyrics and when you did, it was like, "Say what?"
With an edited outro, Prostitute would have been a decent single.
I don't wanna seem an asshole always disagreeing w/you man, but I do disagree w/everything u say here!
Re: Prostitute - that outro is one of the best things on the record.
Re: Sorry - great fking lyrics. & one of the few bits of humour on the album. The chorus line is awesome on so many levels, not to mention loadsa other highlights (e.g. 'you know where to put your 'just shut-up & sing')
Re: SLTS - I've seen it on this board before people crapping on its lyrics (axlin I think). Which is frankly ridiculous. What would you have said when Little Richard tore it up w/Tutti Frutti?!

Re: Bumblefoot not happy? Speculating....
I remember when Rockband(?) came out some months before the album and it had Shackler's Revenge on it, they (probably Mysteron) said @ HTGTH that this song is going to be the first single.
Imagine... the first 'GN'R song' in 17 years...wouldn't have even reached the rock charts at all. If Better would have been a 'bit strange' from GN'R for a casual listener, what about that White Zombie mess?

The article is a bit choppy, the misspellings suggest it was OCR'd from a print source. If someone would have the original magazine copy, they could check whether it had additional headings, like so

Re: Bumblefoot not happy? Speculating....
well you rem how pissy axl was regarding the SCoM single edit..
i do know where youse are coming from - it's a stunning, wonderful close to the actual album, but in terms of being a single it wouldn't work.
