Ab-so-fuckin' lutely. Even I can attest to that, seeing Slash live, Bucket live, and current Guns live... all within the same year. So I had every perspective and tone to really judge each sound, and compare while it was fresh in my mind.

I can honestly say as soon as I heard Slash's guitar, specifically on the Guns N' Roses songs he played, I didn't even hear Myles. I heard it and knew instantly... THAT is what's missing in GNR's sound. I love new GN'R, but on those Appetite tracks -- Slash and ONLY Slash plays those songs right. Period. Because he can do it Duff-less. If anything Tommy is better than who's in Slash's band, but Tommy's band is missing -- SLASH.

It just doesn't sound right. Sure DJ & Ron & Richard play the fucking hell out of it man. They really do, all great guys. But just I what I saw and heard... it's the FEEL man. The feel is fucking wrong with those dudes and they can't do anything about it. It just is what it is.

Slash & Duff play ALL of the Appetite tracks better, short of Bucket's Nightrain solo.

I heard Slash do SCOM & PC 2011 live with Myles. And I heard Axl do SCOM & PC 2011 live with his guys.

Slash & Myles did it fucking BETTER. Like beyond fucking better. The only thing Axl had over Myles was he does the outro portion of PC FAR better, but Slash does the guitar better than GN'R.

Slash rules on AFD, Patience, Civil War, those tunes. Those are HIS babies. The only song i've heard live that I will give full credit to, is Axl and DJ, Ron, Richard & Tommy play Estranged FAR FAR better live than Slash, Gilby & Duff did back in the day. It just sounds right and somehow Ron's guitar sound is very similar to Slash's, and the closest sound he has to Slash's guitar on ANYTHING GN'R currently performs.

--------------------------------

As for new GN'R songs, that's all Bucket. When you hear Bucket's guitar live and the tone of it, you immediately think -- man Shackler's Revenge would sound WORLDS better than how Ron is playing it, even though Ron nails the solo. Ron's tone is off compared to Bucket's guitar.

-----------------------------------

Now I don't want this to seem like a bag on Axl's current boys. They are the "whole package" and the best outfit for Axl post-1993. But if we are picking pieces out -- Slash remains the man. DJ & Ron would even agree with that.

How ironic. Good post.

I don't know if Axl smokes weed or not, but he definitely ain't doing alot of coke anymore. He looked in 2006, honestly, like he was still hittin' the splenda. He and Baz even joked about it on Trunk's show back during their heyday, and it still came across as 'code' to me. I think that might be why Axl looked better in 2006-07 than he does today. That was his zenith during the new era in terms of physicality. He was a lean mean Axl machine when I saw him in the Fall of 2006. He looked great, and still looked young-er.

As for drinking, he seems to be gettin' after it more, alot more. I think it boils down to he's drinking all the time and he's falling off on his exercising, regardless of his age.

Axl does not strike me as a guy who is hitting the gym, or the same guy who was quoted as "runs 4 hours a day, everyday".

I think Axl's biggest problem is GN'R have basically been touring since Thanksgiving 2009. The road can be hell, and because they haven't really taken a significant break, he's falling off the wagon.

See, I'm more of an overall song guy with an emphasis on vocals.  So that's probably why Standing In The Sun appeals to me more.  But I do love Slash's playing and the tone he sets on that song.  And to be fair, I think Myles is quite fine on Anastasia too.

I guess more what I'm asking is do you think Axl ever sees clips like that(cause we all know he does) and thinks to himself "Fuck me I wish I had a guy who played that way on CD"

I can totally see it. I can see it both ways. I bet Slash at times thinks to himself "I'd love to hear Axl's voice on this..."

Bono, he knows he has nobody in that band that can do what Slash just did in that clip. If I am Axl and saw that it would make me hate Slash more, because instead of being a washed up player, he is better than ever and is exactly the thing Axl needs in his band right now.

I agree in theory.  I don't think Axl ever "wanted" Slash to leave GNR.  I don't think he "wanted" to start all over and reform a new GNR.  I think that's why he feels so betrayed and hates Slash to this day.  He hoped to gain control of the name, yet continue on with the main principles.  That didn't happen, so his entire plan was shot.  He's had to work on the fly since then and obviously it hasn't worked so well.  And yes, he regrets it even more the fact that Slash is still hugely popular.  And dare I say, MORE relevant that Axl Rose is these days.
