I agree and I see what you mean in theory. In fact sometimes it's why I dislike it when there's an official video with a "story" or if the artist says too much about the meaning of the song.

I'm working through the same problem now with one of my songs, I feel like if i make a video for it, all of a sudden the music is secondary to whatever image is on screen.

But at the same time I can see they still might want to control what they are associated with. Like if i make a video that implies november rain is about the rain drops of the blood of babies I murder and eat every november or something wrong like that....and it's proshot quality and looks real...does Axl want people stumbling onto my video and equating his song with that...thats the sorts of problems I can foresee.
