Re: GnR = The Beatles?
Got that rt.
Back in the day, it was common to take bets on how long they'll last as a working unit and as human beings. They sort of copped out (pardon the expression) of the suicide department, which would've been a proper stage ending for them.
A part of the craziness of GNR is that they survived, even Steven.
Axl built a legacy of himself as a cuckoo with an album, and now that he has delivered the said album, he can be the elder statesman of Rock, snubbing RRHOF in favor of Lana Del Rey.
There may be a happy ending, still. RRHOF was a light at the end of a sorry little tunnel, and hopefully everybody enjoyed the puppet show. No disrespect for Myles, but the fact is, Axl got most of the limelight by skipping out.
The amazing thing is how everybody and his brother call out Axl for being obsessed with the Slash hatred, yet people all the same remain obsessed with Axl, waiting for him to do anything worth bickering about.
In that sense, he should've gone Morrison. It's horrible, I know. It's called showbiz.
Re: GnR = The Beatles?
I completely agree, and I agree MORE today on Sunday, than I did going into Saturday night.
I'm not using the wrestling analogies everywhere just cause, I really feel like this whole thing has turned into some weird ass WWE backstage drama.
Look at that audience in Cleveland. Axl was enormously booed. But he was booed, BECAUSE he's over with the audience as rock's #1 heel. Slash didn't get near the pop.
But if Axl were to have pulled an "April Fools" and walked out on that stage as a surprise, that place would've ERUPTED into cheers (almost like someone's music hitting, )
And all of those cheers would've been for Axl. And Axl alone.
Once again we've come full circle. Axl needs Slash, and Slash needs Axl, again.
Seriously apex, ALL THE MEDIA had talked about has been NOTHING BUT AXL ROSE, at last night's Hall of Fame. They've talked more about Axl NOT being there, than any other aspect of the show, including the cool induction for Chili's.
Re: GnR = The Beatles?
When I saw the thread title I immediately thought wtf? Not bad though it turns out. For being two vastly different bands they do have a lot of similarities.
Yeah, I've always hated the Beatles/GN'R comparisons but Buzz made some real great points on the similarities. Didn't even consider it before.

Re: GnR = The Beatles?
I still think that had something tragic happened, like they all flamed out by 1992-94 period (think Steven is fired, then OD's, Izzy sinks into even more addiction after leaving and dies by 1995/96 when he OD'ed, Slash OD's in 1992 / tour is off, Axl commits suicide in 1994 due to stress, burnout, outright craziness, and disillusion ala Cobain, and Duff succumbs to heroin in 1994 or alcohol in 1997 as he told in his book).
I think if they had blown up like everyone predicted... they would be more fondly remembered.
Sounds horribly macabre, but death tends to immortalize and the media plays it up, and ultimately history is re-written. There's alot of people who sold FAR more records dead, than they ever did alive.
I agree with this. If the "new GN'R" thing had never happened and they all flamed out in the mid-90's like the world expected, they'd get the same treatment as Cobain, Morrison, Joplin, Hendrix, et al.
Re: GnR = The Beatles?
Here's the point I hope we really get to...I am part of a Beatles site and while everybody has opinions about who did what and favorites, at the end of the day they all come together for the music and they all appreciate ALL the music. Doesn't mean they LOVE all the music, but they appreciate it (including the post break-up stuff). I hope we can get to that point, but I think THIS is where the name issue makes it more difficult.
Re: GnR = The Beatles?
I think we can get there to a point. It's much more civil, I think anyway, between the two "camps" now, at least here. But we're a much different community compared to the other sites, too.
There's just some people that won't accept it. And it's like they're afraid to say something good about the new line up. Almost exactly how it's the other way around over at HTGTH.
John and Paul both seemed to resent the band at certain times, where Axl seems to just resent band members. I don't think Axl can see himself as something seperate from the band name, like he's one in the same. And I'm not saying that as an ego thing, but literally they're the same artistic creation, it's a part of who he is. Like Trent Reznor is with NIN. Where John and Paul, at least in their later careers, seemed to want to establish themselves as their own people, not as some singular entity know as The Beatles.

Re: GnR = The Beatles?
I don't consider the new band to be Guns N' Roses. I have Chinese Democracy in my iTunes Library as "Axl Rose." But I enjoy it as a solo work for sure. It's not perfect by any means, but it has some good stuff on it. I'm not sure why people can't look past the name on the album and simply listen to it as a solo work, because that's really what it is. It's pretty lame that people give it a 1-star rating just because Axl insists on calling it GN'R.

It'll never happen. Or at least i've been doing this so long that i've become disillusioned with it.
Key difference?
John Lennon did not run off and keep The Beatles going with an entirely different lineup.
I still truely feel Axl would have NOT gotten the negative attention he got if he had simply RETIRED the name.
I truely believe that. It has been the WORST thing to EVER happen to ANY Guns N' Roses fan. It has created faction after faction after faction of fanatical fans all out to prove each other's version is better. 1985-1990 vs. 1990-1991 vs. 1991-1994 vs. 1999 vs. 2001-2002 vs. 2006 vs. 2006-2008 vs. 2009-2012.
Ugh, I HATE that aspect of the fanbase. I cannot fucking stand it.
