Re: Nirvana - 20 years

This was my problem with Pearl Jam's "Ten: Deluxe Re-issue"
Supposedly Brenden O'Brien remixed the original album for Disc 1 to have a "simpler" sound.
I have listened to alot of music, alot of raw album tracks, DAT masters, and remixed music myself...
I CAN NOT tell the damn difference between the remixed Disc 1 of Ten, and original album version on Disc 2.
I wonder if this Nevermind reissue is the same deal.
I haven't got the remastered Ten, but I have heard the remastered versions of songs on the Greatest Hits double CD, and they sound livelier to my ears. Some of them have slightly different intros, as if they're different takes, and I actually prefer the remasters to the original recordings.
They sound more raw, kinda like Russ said.

^ Is that the PJ or Nirvana best off you're talking about?
Sometimes I like loud remasters despite the loudness war...the remastered megadeth stuff sounded awesome. I think it depends on the genre and how it's done.
Black Gives Way to Blue by AIC is also smashed to hell on a technical level but sounds badass on my speakers. Then again...they can fuck it up too - ala death magnetic.

I'm talking about the Pearl Jam Greatest Hits. It features the remixed Ten tracks from the Brendan O'Brien remaster.
I almost can't listen to Death Magnetic these days, especially on my iPod. Which sucks, because I love the songs on there, but it is so loud and distorted ridiculously!

I found the "remixed" Ten to be way dryer than the original mixes, which I liked a lot more.
What I've heard about Nevermind is that they did the whole "HEY! Nevermind has to be SUPER LOUD!" thing with it, but again I haven't heard it to confirm myself.
HAH! Believe it or not, I had the deluxe edition lying around. Apparently I got it, forgot about it, and never listened to it.
Either way, I did listen to it while working, and you're right. Way over-amplified.

I sat down and listened back and forth, back and forth, and although I still think the difference is minimal, there is a cleaner sound with the remasters.
But I think that's part of the issue for me. Despite Pearl Jam's opinions, i've always thought of a grunge band and always will. Part of the appeal of Ten's original sound to me, was there was softer sound to it, that to my ears came across a tad darker in mood. Maybe it's just me...
