Uh, I don't want to get dragged into this, but Ali said several times GN'R wasn't getting in based on CD, or that it played a part, or was a contributing factor. I haven't read where he's said that. If I missed where he's said that, please point it out to me. I just keep seeing that being repeated over and over...
And D stormed into the thread trying to instigate something. Why he brought up CD is beyond me. And then continued with this:
"It has ONLY about 5-6 really good songs on it" "CD was a catastrophic failure."
I think D might be letting off steam here because he won't at HTGTH. At least, he did that not too long ago here. For the record D, I wouldn't treat anything Axl put out like it was Darkside Of The Moon." It's not blinders, or fandom, or anything else. I think CD is a great album.
AFD probably would have got them into the HOF, but UYI is why they're going in on the first ballot, imho.
Once again, u are looking from a die hard fan perspective.
What u think about CD doesn't matter. What I think about it doesn't matter
Truth is, It did terrible on the charts, The Singles all bombed, It didn't sell anywhere near expectation, no videos... it didn't move the needle any.
Now if u love the album, that is your right, but music is a "COMMERCIAL" thing. Last I checked, GNR weren't some coffee shop avant garde band where these things don't matter. It was the most anticipated comeback of all time and it came and went like a fart in the wind. That is the truth.
U guys are treating CD like it was just another band releasing an album. this thing was mythical and bombed.

does anyone here think that they would have NOT been first ballot this time around if cd was NOT released in '08?????

I just have a hard time endorsing guys getting into the HOF as GNR that had nothing to do with GNR being HOF worthy.
Love what they are doing now, but they weren't the ones living in Shitty rehearsal spaces/apts, stealing,struggling, barely living above 3rd world country standards slaving away in clubs and hustling/fighting/scratching/crawling to make it big.
I'd personally only induct Original 5 and maybe Sorum and thats a big maybe.

GNR hadn't released an original studio album in 17 years
Radio stations, EVERYBODY was giving this the royal treatment.
STILL
Not even a number 1 rock single.
STP released an avg song "Between The Lines" after years apart and the damn thing broke records for number of adds. Chili Peppers came out with Rain Dance Maggie which is an OK song.. and it hit number 1....
That is the BIG indictment.

Regarding RRHOF:
"Music to me has never been a competitive sport. We do what we do, and if you connect with an audience and write the songs that feel good to you in the process, that is reward enough. Getting a Grammy or an American Music Award seems a little bit weird in this whole context. I mean, are you BETTER than all those other bands? No. You are just doing YOUR thing, and they theirs. It's not a competition.
But it became very apparent to me that fans of GN'R felt very motivated for our band to "get into the Hall." All of those fans ARE very important to me, and thus getting this RRHOF nod was a victory for them. And so I am deeply honored and feel very good about this whole deal. Thank you all."
Regarding opening for GNR:
"My band Loaded has been asked to play a couple of shows with Axl this weekend in Seattle and Vancouver. I was somehow reluctant at first to do this. I love that dude, but wanted to sort of stay out of the fray, especially after that whirlwind tour of the world we had just done. AND that damn book tour.
But this fray is only a fray if I let it be. And now I am actually pretty excited to see my old pal. His band is the nicest bunch of fellas, and I will be home after all. The KeyArena will be rocking tomorrow night . . . and I hope you all show up.
After all, it is just some dudes doing what they know how to do best: connect with the audience, that fan-ship that has honored us with their presence for so damn long. And THAT, my friends . . . is overwhelming."

NOBODY IS ARGUING THAT THE ORIGINAL 5 SHOULDN'T BE INDUCTED. NOBODY HERE HAS A PROBLEM THAT THEY'RE THE ONES GETTING INDUCTED. NOBODY HERE IS SAYING CD IS THE REASON, OR A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR AS TO WHY THEY'RE GETTING IN.
If you have a problem at HTGTH - KEEP IT THERE.
