So some UYI memories.

I was 14 when the album came out in 1991.

My best mate and I had a taped VHS copy of the LALD video clip and would watch it in the dark - letting the light from our old CRT television act as an actual strobe light in the room, and we'd go nuts like we were on stage with GNR.

Then with T2 if just felt like the whole world was about "You Could be Mine" for a while - that song at that time just kind of captured a spirit in the air or something.

Pretty much spent the next few years digging into every cut on that album and getting obsessed with each song one at a time. If you listen to them start to finish it really is a genius body of work.

Great read...  I can't judge any of these folks... Axl didn't really want partners, and in most businesses, partners usually end badly.  Slash had a fear if he pissed off Axl too much, their wouldn't be a GNR anymore.  I can see that, he was afraid.. Remember too, Axl was the old guy of the bunch.  3 years older than Slash and in your early 20's, that is a lot.  Slash wasn't "anti epic", just anti so many "epics" on one album.  I think he likes the song, just that Axl was annoying as fuck probably with his "perfectionist" attitude.

Duff was a drunk that had no ability to do anything.  At the end, this was all about Slash and Axl.  Izzy and Duff were too casual, but with Slash, he had his heart all in that band and in many ways was really hurt by Axl and probably too scared to say anything.  I think now that shit would never go down again with Slash.  He learned his lesson and loves  and appreciates Myles everyday because he is the anti-Axl.

Slash didn't have the balls to tell Axl what to do until he finally quit in 1996. Just admit it, Slash licked Axl's ass during the UYI years and on top of that, made one of the dumbest moves in rock history by agreeing to sign over the Gnr name to the Fuhrer.

Just admit it and live with it. 16

I'd like to see an alternate universe where Izzy stays in the band a few more years instead of bailing a nanosecond after UYI was released.

Certain drug free people especially.

Yeah when Axl was itching his nose every five seconds during the UYI tour it was because he had allergies.

Great post Apex and like others have said, thanks for posting it Russ.

I love Slash as a guitarist and he seems cool.  As a band member and leader in the band, he had issues, as a guitar player, for Axl, he is the best Axl could have ever had.  And for hating to do those songs, he knocked them out of the fucking park because he wanted band go on rather than Axl walk.  Some say its a pussy move, maybe it is, but for my enjoyment I am glad he was pussy, because of that we got some masterpieces....

I remember 7 and being into Terminator, and just an innocent little kid and watching the YCBM video when it premiered on MTV (or somewhere around when it was brand spanking) and just...

just...

Being blown the fuck away. Speechless. Is it cool? Is it scary? All I knew was what I heard sounded cool as fuck and I wanted to be IN THAT VIDEO, and I never looked back. Little did I know how much influence GN'R would have over my life from then until now.

To this day, I think the You Could Be Mine video is far and away the best video they ever did, and to this day I think the 1991/UYI-studio GN'R is THE definitive Guns N' Roses.

That's ultimately the lasting impression of Guns N' Roses. Use Your Illusion for me, represents the alpha/omega of anything and everything that ever was, or ever will be - Guns N' Fuckin' Roses!

Spot On.

Axlin to mock Slash for realising Axl was his key to continued money making and staying in the band is a bit harsh in my opinion. I come from poverty and have (with my parents great help) gone a good bit further than they ever got, as did my sisters. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to be broke like your parents. Being broke is shit, I don't ever want to go there again and my siblings and I work really hard at stuff we don't often enjoy to ensure that we don't. Guitar playing is Slash's job and his only means of income, that has to affect the decisions he makes.

The heart Slash poured into Axl's epics helps keep them the masterpieces they are today. If he was doing it purely for money I don't believe the heart would be there. You cannot hear that kind of love in Contraband songs. You cannot hear that love in CD tunes either.

Slash's issue was the amount of epics. Its the main issue with CD today. Axl does not do 'less is more' very well.

I totally agree that Slash should have stood up to Axl as Matt implored him to do. Keith did it to Mick in the Stones and the band stayed together. Crying foul for 20 years because you couldn't find your balls at the critical moment is not cool.

Slash's playing on the UYI epics (Nov Rain-Civil War- Locomotive- Coma- Breakdown-Estranged) is perfect. If all those epics aren't on the Illusions at the same time, I probably am not a Gnr fan today. Those songs proved to me they were my generations Led Zep. 9

So, yeah, I am glad Slash ultimately gave in. It's like a marriage. One spouse is always the stronger of the two personality wise. You make beautiful children together. Then, sometimes, relationships fall apart and someone decides to leave. Slash decided to leave. sad
