he's getting old. precious time is of the essence. it's all he's got & it's going fast.
unless he's gonna sit on the vault until all his enemies are dead or he eventually feels he's won whatever battle he's fighting, or indeed released posthumously (godforbid)

fwiw - i actually haven't voted in the poll yet! i'm still unconvinced. i would tend to agree w/monkey that axl is a bit of a mental-midget (to borrow another tony soprano quote) & that his intentions are lost somewhere in his madness & weird world.. but there is evidence that he does take his fans for granted @ the very least..

Does he care about his fans? I voted YES.

GNR has performed for MILLIONS of people over the last decade.

Whenever he personally handed out roses to fans in the 90's, he cared!
Whenever he personally handed out tequila-shots to fans in 2010, he cared!
When he ran across the front row at Rock Am Ring slappin' hands in 2006, he cared!
When he got a hissyfit over the machinary that neglected his art in 2008, he cared!
Whenever he stopped to sign autographs and pose for pictures, he cared!
When he, in one of his rare tweets thanked the fans (for whatever), he cared!
When he, on the recent tour, performed more songs from the last record (than what is normal), he cared!
And when he spent hours and hours answering questions to the die-hards on three different fan-forums (that a magazine/newspaper would prolly pay top-dollar for), he cared!

But does he care to the level of what a fan who created a poll on a messageboard would want him to? Prolly not!

And that's fine by me!

I guess we're all at different stages of our pipedream of what it is GNR should and could do.

I'm personally at the point of whatever does or doesn't float my way, is cool!

Doesn't matter to me if the next songs from GNR are written recently by Axl/Ashba/Ron/Fortus or if it's songs written by Axl/Pitman at Axl's studio in '99.
Whatever the case, it will be new to ME!

And as a fan, I'll prolly enjoy the fuck out of 'em!!!

the vault/throwing the fans a bone -  i didn't mean unreleased tracks, i meant something SIMPLE like putting a video on youtube or some official concert footage. even releasing a live EP on Itunes of the 'acoustic' shows. it's easy for ANYONE ELSE in the world, but not for axl.

I was a huge advocate of this strategy the moment the release date was announced....

- Radio 1 Live Lounge performance     M.I.A. did this months before Kala's release performing 4 new songs and Galang which elevated her buzz to the stratosphere and anticipation for the album after getting this sneak preview was insane. I'll never forget that feeling hearing Bamboo Banga for the first time. During my years as a hardcore fan, other than seeing her concerts, THIS was the highlight.

- Itunes Live Session    Artists/bands go into the Itunes studio and perform new tracks and a hit or two live and like you mentioned, is usually an EP of 4 or 5 songs.

- Live at World Cafe    Fan base would have went ape shit over this. While this typically happens with smaller artists(although M.I.A. did this after Paper Planes exploded so I doubt GNR would have been turned down). Artist/band goes to their studio and is interviewed by the DJ about the new album and the interview is basically 4 mini interviews as it is stopped several times so artist/band can perform 3 or 4 new songs. Its basically a mini concert in pristine quality with zero crowd noise. Can you imagine Axl being interviewed and every ten minutes they take a break so the band can bust out CD, Better, and one or two other songs?    Not many Santigold fans here, but the absolute best version of LES Artistes was her performance of it at World Cafe. Has a completely different vibe than the album version or any other live version.

-The U2 TV promo strategy    Go On Letterman, Leno, etc. and instead of jerking off to a 20+ year old song, you hit the audience over the head with a sledgehammer by performing several new songs and the new songs being performed change from show to show. When No Line got released, non singles were charting higher than the current single due to so many people hearing most of the album live before its release on these shows and they bought the tracks on Itunes.

As soon as it became crystal clear the band wasn't going to do shit, I tossed these pipe dreams that could have easily been reality out the window.

re: the prolific thing - is something i think we've known since Moby (or Youth?) revealed they had trouble even getting axl singing when they came to the table.

It was both. 16 Youth said in 97 or 98 that he went to Axl's house and he said he "wasn't ready yet" to sing and it was like he was too shy or nervous to even attempt it.

Axl tried bringing Moby aboard in the late 90s. Moby was interested at first but had to bail because of Axl's reluctance to record any vocals. when Moby brought up the absence of vocals on the songs, Axl got agitated. Moby got the fuck out of dodge and rightfully so. Take into account this happened during that period fans thought TWO albums were near completion. Just one of many laughable moments of the CD saga.

Would have LOVED to have heard a GNR album produced by Moby and the possibility of him actually contributing musically to the album would have been very interesting to say the least. Not a hardcore Moby fan but Natural Blues is fucking killer and his remix of Soundgarden's song 'Dusty' is better than the album version.

For the record I wasn't saying he was a mental migit...just that he's clearly an emotional person, and I think that may be the reason behind periods of silence and/or decisions that most of the fan base wouldn't choose if they had charge. Or what that band called the "stepford wives" moments of people around him.

From his interviews, and his lyrics, I think Axl is a very intelligent person.

I just think for fans to call him lazy or uncaring is simplistic and ignores the vast body of evidence that Axl's life has been full of struggles and that he seems to have had to battle with himself and others for the level of happiness and contol he enjoys.

U2 is McDonald's at this point. They are the Steel Wheels 80's/90's/00's Rolling Stones...blah. Yes, they are legitimately one of the greatest bands of all time. However, it is getting stale and their albums don't come close to matching the records from 85-91. Kudos for staying classy and staying together, but sometimes it's time to call it a day. Gnr was done in 91 and it is kinda cool that they left at that point. Stones should have been done in 73....The Who as well. Meh...rambling.

Doesn't change the fact they know how to properly promote a new album. They have the balls to shove the new material down your throat without relying on their biggest hits to push the product.

Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge kicked ass.

NONE of these dinosaur acts we've liked for decades can match the material in their prime. No Line was half killer/half filler, which is what I expect at this point from these bands and that half killer was good enough to warrant the purchase of the album.

That may not be The Joshua Tree, but it's good enough material for 21st century U2.

My interest in Ashba, Fortus, Frank, and Ron doing a new cut and paste job on ancient songs is below zero.

I'd love to hear it.

The age of a song is irrelevant to me. November Rain was an old song by the time it hit UYI.

I'd love to have another Album of Axl melodies even if the songs had their origin in 1990 or whatever.

As for the lack of B sides. I can understand not wanting to sacrifice a new track to B-sidedom - if it's good enough to hear make it an A side, if it's not - why release it at all. Although I would have dug something like a cover or something as a B side. Like a studio cut of sailing or something like that.
