Monkey, it's not artificial reverence. At no point in Chinese Democracy did Axl's vocals come close to AFD or Lies. I think he peaked in the studio with the acoustic stuff on Lies. It's pretty much been downhill ever since, although right now his voice is in better shape than it was for a lot of the Chinese Democracy recordings. And at no point in Velvet Revolver, Snakepit, or his current solo work has Slash come even close to writing such memorable guitar stuff as AFD, Lies, or UYI. And there is a gaping difference between Izzy's songwriting in GN'R and his solo stuff. My theory on this is simply that AFD/Lies and indeed some of the best material on UYI was built up from years of experience living on the streets. Once they hit it huge right off the bat, the inspiration just wasn't going to continue forever.

I'd agree that the situation isn't easily replicated...but I dunno I feel that musically the individual parts are pretty close..maybe not the entire songs cos it's not the same bands...but the parts.
Like that "I would do anything for you" uber-high part on TWAT really blows my mind and I think that's just as good as anything back in the day vocally. Likewise Slash's playing in places is pretty damn mindblowing still. I think it's just the full songs don't benifit from each other the way they used to.

I mean it's derailing the thread...but I think Slash soloing on any of the CD ballads, or Axl doing a vocal part to any of the rockier VR or Slash tunes...when you consider what the other guy would bring to those numbers if all had been well in GNR land - I think the results would push any of those tunes to UYI standard and in some cases maybe approaching AFD. They both still got game, they just don't get on!

Tired fantasy threads like this are whats killing forums, Insults and my dick is bigger than yours posts make users wonder why they log into a particular forum. IMHO this thread belongs in TWAT. Everyone knows this will not happen untill you hear it from axls mouth! even then he could back out.

Dude, alot of us have been around so long, that we post these posts to actually poke fun at the generations of LAME forum posters and factions that have existed over the last decade of GN'R forums.
Right now, i'm being a Slashite circa 2004/05. Tomorrow i'll be an Axlite circa 2002, or something else.
